Job Title: Senior Data Engineer
Location: Remote
Department: Product
Reports to: Head of Product
We’re a small, fast-moving healthcare data analytics company looking for a Senior Data Engineer to own the data pipelines, warehouse, and reporting infrastructure that powers our pharmacy analytics. This role will lead the design of how we ingest, transform, and model data from internal systems and external vendor sources, and how we build the dashboards and report our clients and internal stakeholders rely on.
The ideal candidate has deep, hands-on SQL expertise and a track record of owning data architecture decisions, not just implementing someone else’s design. Experience with SQL Server, .NET, Azure, Power BI, and / or DevOps is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and own ETL/ELT pipelines that ingest, clean, and aggregate data from internal systems and external vendor sources.
- Own the architecture and evolution of our pharmacy data warehouse, setting data formatting, structure, and modeling standards.
- Write and review performant, testable SQL for Microsoft SQL Server, including stored procedures, indexing strategy, and query/execution plan optimization.
- Design and build reports and dashboards (e.g., Power BI) that track performance against client and business goals.
- Lead code reviews and architecture discussions, ensuring solutions meet security, scalability, and performance standards.
- Partner with product, analytics, and client-facing teams to translate ambiguous business needs into technical data requirements.
- Own data relationships and integrations with external vendors and claims/pharmacy data sources.
- Work closely with infrastructure teams to design and manage data services in the Azure Cloud (Azure SQL DB, Blob Storage, etc.) environment.
- Mentor other engineers on data engineering and SQL best practices and help set data engineering standards as the team grows.
- Evaluate emerging data engineering practices and tools and drive recommendations for continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience in data engineering or software development.
- Deep SQL expertise, including stored procedures, indexing strategy, query optimization, and execution plan analysis on production relational databases.
- Proven experience designing and building ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehouse/data modeling for production systems, not just maintaining existing ones.
- Track record of owning data architecture decisions and tradeoffs for a growing system, including tooling and platform choices.
- Experience deploying and maintaining data services on Azure or another cloud provider (Azure SQL DB, Blob Storage, or equivalents).
- Strong communication and remote collaboration skills, with experience working directly with product and client-facing teams.
- Experience reviewing others’ code and mentoring less experienced engineers.
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and agile workflows.
Nice to Have
- Experience defining data architecture standards and strategy for a scaling organization.
- Experience leading or managing data engineers.
- Experience building and maintaining reports/dashboards with Power BI or similar BI tools.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Proficiency in .NET Core (C#) and REST API development.
- Experience with DevOps, Azure AD, Entity Framework, Log Analytics, Azure SQL DB.
- Understanding of security best practices (OWASP, role-based access control).
- Prior experience with 340B, PBM, or other healthcare/pharmacy data is a plus.
